DDA Forensics & Florida International University (FIU) host an exclusive Wall of Wind tour and Continuing Education class! Join us for an afternoon of expert insights, groundbreaking hurricane research, and immersive learning.

FIU’s International Hurricane Research Center Associate Director and Meteorologist Hall of Famer Erik Salna will open the event with a recap of the 2026 hurricane season and a look ahead, followed by a live tour of FIU’s Wall of Wind facility. Attendees will then take part in an exclusive DDA Forensics Continuing Education course led by Dr. Ziad Azzi, Director of Engineering at DDA Forensics.

💨 Part 1: This section covers wind effects on residential structures, including wind flow, pressure patterns, bluff-body aerodynamics, and roof behavior.

🌊 Part 2: This section covers storm-surge effects, including surge formation, wave action, flooding measurements, and distinguishing wind versus storm-surge damage.

NHERI: Wall of Wind Tour

The NHERI Wall of Wind (WOW) Experimental Facility (EF) at Florida International University (FIU) is powered by a combined 12-fan system capable of repeatable testing in up to 157 mph wind speeds through its flow management system. The unique advantage of the NHERI WOW EF is multi-scale (full-scale to 1:400) and high Reynolds number simulation of the effects of wind and wind-driven rain. CE Course: Wind Vs. Storm Surge Damage: Case Studies from Helene

In post-hurricane property claims, determining whether structural failure or envelope breach happened from wind forces before storm surge arrived is one of the most contentious forensic questions we encounter.

When a coastal structure suffers catastrophic damage, the timeline is everything. Did high-velocity wind compromise the roof and wall assemblies first, or did hydrodynamic wave action and surge cause the initial failure? Answering that requires specific physical evidence: fastener deformation, directional debris impact patterns, localized pressure coefficients, and watermark elevations correlated directly against meteorological and hydrodynamic data.

Our Wind Doctors, Dr. Ziad Azzi, Dr. Krishna Sai Vutukuru and Dr. Manual Matus break down the exact methodology forensic engineers use to differentiate wind versus wave mechanisms in the field.

This special 2-hour course provides an overview of the inspector’s role in recognizing wind and storm surge-related damage to residential coastal buildings. We cover a basic overview of hurricanes, wind events, and how winds and waves affect properties. Multiple key facts are discussed in order to draw a clear conclusion between wind- and wave-related damage to residential coastal structures.
