Gerry C. Mertsching
Senior Forensic Engineer
Gerry C. Mertsching, PE, SE, FRSE, brings over 40 years of global engineering expertise to his role as Senior Forensic Engineer at DDA Forensics. Licensed as both a Professional Engineer and Structural Engineer in multiple U.S. states, Gerry specializes in complex forensic investigations involving residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
At DDA, he leads cause and origin investigations related to structural failures, construction defects, and property damage from wind, hail, fire, plumbing leaks, flooding, tree and vehicle impacts, and other catastrophic events. His assessments address a broad spectrum of perils, including hurricanes, tropical storms, derechos, tornadoes, snow, ice, storm surge, lightning, pipe breaks, drainage issues, explosions, sinkholes, vehicle and tree impacts. He evaluates damage across major building systems, including roofs, exterior cladding, foundations, and structural components.
Gerry’s career spans multimillion- to multibillion-dollar projects across the U.S. and the Middle East. He serves as an expert witness and has been retained for both defense and plaintiff litigation, with a proven track record of delivering conclusive opinions, supported by scientific fact. As a seasoned expert across multiple case types, Gerry is experienced in deposition and trial testimony.
His extensive technical background includes all phases of design and construction, including field inspections, structural assessments, code reconciliation and review, project management, and contractor coordination. His experience domestically and abroad provides Gerry with a unique and exceptionally well-rounded vantage point, supported by real world experiences.
Gerry holds a Master’s in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University and a Bachelor’s in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He also maintains Haag Residential, Commercial and Wind Certifications and an active NCEES record.
